National Crime prevention is important in the UK as without this there would be higher crime rates and possibly higher fatalities due to crime rates. Crime prevention isn't to only stop crime from occurring but to also help with aftermath of said crimes happening by offering more support for victims of crimes.

Preventing crime nationally needs to be done through educating people on crime and how to spot and stop crime from occurring, and also explaining the dangers to youth about how crime can take over their lives through influences such as social media and the music industry.
The government wants to help combat crime through preventative measures rather then reactive measures, this means focusing on trying to stop the crime initially rather then just focusing on the aftermath.
In the early days of crime prevention the focus was heavily on the police, leaving the police to do all of the work and the public stay away. This was to give all the responsibility to the police, their main focus in the early 1800s was to focus on crime measurement rather then prevention. The harsh and strict punishments criminals would receive in the 1800's was used as a deterrent for others to not commit crime.
It wasn't until the late 20th century when Thatcher came in that the focus wasn't just on police but it was on other agencies as well to try and stop crime from occurring.
This was to try and help the police focus on other things and help us as a community to come together to help combat crime.
When Tony Blair was in power he introduced the Crime and Disorder Act 1998 this act was to help tackle antisocial behavior crimes and introduced ASBO's.
Anti Social Behavior Orders were mainly given to youth who were looked at as troubled, but it was a preventative measure so these youth did not have to go to prison. Blair was hoping an ASBO would deter youth from going to prison. With an ASBO there was usually a curfew so you could not leave your house late on a night, you would usually have to check in with rather a police officer or a probation officer aswell (Crime And disorder Act, 1998)
The beating crime plan was introduced in 2021 and this is to help reduce crime and also give the police more powers then what they currently have. They want to do this by expanding the stop and search procudures but by doing this there has been some back lash on "racial profiling" as some people believe that the stop and search tool is used in a racist manner, stopping small ethnicity groups.
The plan also wants to reduce and tackle violent crime such as knife crime, which is a high leading crime currently in the UK. By doing this they want to introduce a higher sentence on knife related crimes to try and deter at risk youth from carrying knifes (Home office 2021)
